Interesting post Ben, and lots to think about. The challenge with going down the health survey route for a disability survey of GB is that there isn't a Welsh Health Survey (WHS). The National Survey for Wales incorporated key measures from the WHS when it was established in 2016. Doing a disability survey off the back of something like the FRS risks context effects with how disability is asked about on that survey alongside other topics, such as welfare benefits. An alternative approach could be to run the questions on a random probability panel survey, which would be cheaper than a stand alone survey, but there are some draw backs to this.

Thanks Debbie, that's really helpful - I'd seen historical papers using the Welsh Health Survey, but hadn't realised it had been discontinued. But wouldn't it be possible to add a module of questions into the National Survey for Wales every few years (if the Welsh Government agreed)? (It sounds like NSfW is quite long because it deliberately combined 5 surveys that came before it).

One can ask. In my experience getting new content onto existing surveys can be difficult, and depends on how many questions and on what topic. Surveys. From what you describe, I suspect that you'd be wanting to run a module's worth of questions and that may likely be too much for an existing survey to accommodate. There are also considerations about the placement of the module and the impact of its inclusion on the rest of the survey. I'd be happy to discuss options further.
